8 Ways to Stay Consistent in Prayer on your journey of freedom

The only way I am going to get from out-of-control to consistently wise eating and Freedom from my addictions is down the path of Prayer.

There are many steps in a Journey. And when I am coaching others on how to begin and take that first step we run through a checklist.

Goals ~ Fitness/Food/Freedom + 90 Day goal = success

Triggers ~ identifying the thoughts and outside influences that cause us to give in to our addiction

Surrender ~ Once we identify our goals and triggers we surrender them to God.

All of these steps are so very vital but Prayer is the glue that holds it all together. Prayer is the time we come to God so He can reveal things and give us the strength, grace and power to walk that road of recovery. When we take the time to pray and surrender ourselves to God He then gently begins to peel off the layers of our old nature and put on our new nature.

Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God-Truly righteous and holy.  Epeshians 4:22-24

Maybe you would say you don’t really have a prayer life right now. Or you struggle to find/make the time and staying consistent seems so impossible.

I have 8 ways to help you stay consistent in prayer on your journey of freedom.

1.) Go to God everyday~ Create this good habit by setting a time that works for you. For me I have fallen in love with getting up about 30min-1 hour before everyone else. I am my most mentally alert and focused in the morning. For someone else it may be during your lunch or at night when everyone has gone to bed and the house is quiet again. Whatever that looks like; you-do-you. Don’t try to copy someone else’s way or you may find yourself frustrated and flat on your face.

2.) Be Specific ~ When you pray don’t be afraid to actually make a request.  Often times I see people afraid to get specific with God. Don’t be! The little details of our lives matter so much to Him.

Casting all your cares { all your anxieties, all your concerns, once and for all} on Him, for He cares about you {with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully}. 1 Peter 5:7 amp.

3.) Ask God to give you a goal ~ So many times when we want to find victory or we are beginning a new adventure (career, healthy eating & exercise routine etc.) we forget to go to God and ask Him. Ask Him, what is the perfect weight for me to lose gain or maintain. Is this the right path for me or better yet ” show me the right path to take that will help me to stay consistent in my quest to maintain my Freedom”

4.) Ask for the desire ~ to stay consistent, the desire to eat right and take care of the body He has given you. The desire to be Free from your addictions or maybe it is a behavior you know He has been nudging you about. Whatever it may be, just like God can take a mustard seed of Faith {Luke 17:6} He can take that same amount of desire and turn it into life changing motivation.

5.) Seek His wisdom ~ Ask Him what changes you need to make in your daily activities in order to bring about His will for you.

Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart; And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. Proverbs 3:5

6.) Commit ~ Yourself and your struggles to God in your prayers. Commit means to devote, apply, give or dedicate. Having an addiction and the desire to be free from it can be such a heavy burden to carry. Giving it to God will help relieve that burden and give you that peace and comfort of knowing that you are never alone..

Commit your way to the Lord; Trust in Him also and He will do it.  Psalm 37:5

7.) Confess ~ Guilt can cause us to do things we would not otherwise do. We eat a “forbidden food” and then throw in the towel because we “failed”. If you blow it-confess. Quickly. This will help halt the feelings of emotional and binge eating. This can be applied to whatever your vice may be.

If we confess our sins to Him,  He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all wickedness. 1John 1:9 NLT

8.) Be Humble ~  Humble yourself and cry out to God when you feel desperate. He will show up every time.

Then He said. “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.

* REMEMBER *

You are not made to be a victim of your poor choices. You were made to be a victorious child of God. Right or wrong choices don’t define you. Your identity is in Christ Jesus when you put your Faith & Trust in Him.
