5 Benefits of drinking water & How to create the habit!

Raise your hand if you either hate drinking water. Or you want to create the habit but just don’t know how. 🙋🏼‍♀️

We all know how important it is, but actually doing it and staying consistent is another thing. Right? Even I struggle to get all my ounces in and I definitely can see and feel the difference when I drink my water and when I don’t.

So let’s talk facts first.

5 Benefits of Drinking Water & Staying Hydrated

Your body is made up of approximately 78% water, depending on your size. It is recommended to drink Eight ~ 8 ounce glasses of water a day. An even better way to make sure your individual body is getting the hydration it needs is to drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces. So what does that look like ~  It’s easy, take your weight, let’s say it is 130 lbs. then divide by 2, = 65 ounces. That is the number just to re-hydrate your body. If you want to take it up a notch aim for your whole body weight!

  1. Improves Energy levels & Boost’s Physical Performance ~ If you feel tired there is a high chance that it could be due to inadequate consumption of water which makes the body function less efficiently. In fact, fatigue is one of the first signs of dehydration. Dehydration can cause fatigue, reduced motivation, and mood swings. Therefore, consumption of ample amounts of water by the body is very important to improve the energy levels while exercising and improving your overall  physical performance.
  2. Improves your MoodResearch indicates that mild dehydration (even one or two percent lower hydration level of hydration than optimal) can negatively affect your mood and ability to think.
  3. Aids in Digestion ~  Being dehydrated can take a toll on your mood and your brain. It helps in improving the mood, boosting memory, reducing the frequency of headaches, and improving brain function. If the body experiences fluid loss, it can lead to anxiety and excessive fatigue. The color of your urine is a good indicator of your level of hydration. The lighter the color the better the level of hydration and vice versa.
  4. Weight Loss ~ Drinking two eight-ounce glasses of water prior to meals can help suppress appetite and support your weight loss efforts. When you drink water, it fills your stomach and reduces the tendency to eat more. Plus, it helps increase the rate at which the body burns fat, and promotes the breakdown and elimination of fat cells. Calorie-free water is also a great replacement for high-calorie drinks like alcohol, sugary fizzy drinks and sodas that often contribute to weight gain. If you are a soda lover try replacing it with a sugar free seltzer.
  5. Flushes out Toxins ~ Water is the carrier of oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to the body parts and also provides an outlet for the removal of toxins, dead cells, and waste material. This happens primarily through urine and sweat.

Now you know some of the benefits of staying hydrated so what are some things you can do to create this healthy habit in your daily routine.

Consistency will make the habit stick. Even with the best intentions we can forget to drink so I find that if I set reminders for myself I do much better

  1. Phone App ~ There are a few good apps for tracking & reminding us to drink our water. Here are a couple I found. You can also just type “water reminder” in the search bar of the App Store to see which one suits you best.

3. Letting the bottle remind you ~ I ordered this water bottle off of Amazon. It is a half gallon and I usually aim for drinking one and half of these. 

If you don’t want to spend the money on a new bottle you can make your own!! Like this one below!

4. If you just can’t stand the thought of drinking all that water, try infusing it with fruit and/or veggies to add a little flavor. Bonus!!

A friend of mine told me about these packets of electrolytes you can add to your water too. **** Remember … You are not supposed to pee out all the water you drink. Your body needs that water to function. Too much water will flush out your electrolytes leaving you with fatigue, headaches and dizziness just to name a few.
