The warm weather has finally arrived. Which means shorts and tanks for my runs. It feels so good to take the weight of winter off and run a little lighter. Plus it is how I work on my tan! ha!
I get comments a lot about my healthy lifestyle and the amount of running/exercise I do. The funny thing is that usually people automatically assume that being “healthy” comes easy to me or I have a massive amount of will power. Neither of which are true.
So Today I want to share with you how I fell in love with being healthy & stay consistent.
First, let’s define healthy (Karen’s definition) 😉 Being healthy to me means feeling strong physically, emotionally and spiritually. It means I am mindful of what I put in my mouth and how it effects my body during and after I eat. I run and do at home strength training. I pay attention to what I am watching and thinking in order to guard my emotions. None of this is perfect. Most of the time it is down right messy.
My motive. Doing it all to Glorify God with my Body. To honor Him.
I have 3 things you can do today to fall in love with being healthy.
Find your Why
I began my health journey at the age of 14 to lose 20lbs. But what I didn’t know was that I was really doing it to feel loved. To be validated and told I was good enough. How many of you know this motive will not be long lasting or fulfilling. You need to find your why.
You will have days that don’t look “healthy” and you may be tempted to quit and go back to your old habits. Your why is what you will refer to when your day doesn’t look the way you want it to. The day you don’t “feel” like exercising or making that healthier food choice. Your why reminds you of the reasons you started and it is what keeps you from giving up.
I have come up with a few questions to help you get started. 1. Why do you want to live a healthier lifestyle? 2. How will it make you feel? 3. How will you do things differently? & What does that look like? 4. Who are you doing it for?
Grab a piece of paper. At the top write “My Healthy Life” (or any other goal) and underneath that write “My Why” Then begin to list out the reasons you want to change to a healthier version of yourself. There is no right or wrong answer here but I will give you something to start with. You deserve this.
Change your mind
You struggle with becoming and staying healthy. But the battle you are fighting isn’t your weight. It isn’t because you don’t like to exercise or you’re lazy. And it is not because you love food too much. The war is in your head. It is the things you tell yourself when you look in the mirror. How you speak to yourself. I’m fat, I’m ugly, I have no self control, I am just too lazy, I will never be able to run or walk that 5k. Nobody cares about me anyway. It is not okay for us to speak to ourselves this way and it is up to us to change it. We can begin to break this cycle in our minds today. It can be as simple as writing one thing down everyday that you appreciate about yourself. Your body. The amazing gift of choice that we have been given in the food all around us. Most importantly tell yourself every day “I deserve this”
Do the next right thing.
Getting healthy. Staying healthy. Loving healthy and being fit. It all starts with a choice. Picture how you want your health and fitness to look like and do the next right thing to get there. This can be a daily thing by mapping out your day each morning. Or most likely it will be a moment by moment decision. Before each meal or snack. At the birthday party. Family dinners. Holiday’s. Summer BBQ’s. Whatever it is do the next right thing for you and your goals.
Finally…. Being healthy isn’t about skinny. The number on the scale. Or how strong you are. It is about simply loving yourself.
This is how I fell in love with being healthy. I remind myself of why I am choosing it. I tell myself we can and will do this. I deserve to live my healthiest life possible. And I do one right thing at a time. This life is made up of one choice at a time. Those choices create habits. Those habits create your lifestyle.
To kick start your new healthy habit I have my favorite protein shake to share with you.
It can vary a little from day to day but it usually starts out like this. Spinach, 1/4 avocado, 8oz. Almond milk, Primal kitchen Coconut vanilla protein powder, Collagen peptides and 1 TBSP Chia seeds. Sometimes I add half of a banana if I am needing extra carbs. But the avocado usually has enough to sustain me.
This one has flax seed, banana and blueberry. Be sure to measure your portion sizes!
Added bonus… the color!! The bright green makes it even better.
What is your favorite way to make a protein shake?
Do you struggle with making healthy choices? If so which of the steps I mentioned do you think will help you the best?
Are you a lover of the hot or cold weather?
